Amy Newsom – Farmers’ visions for a landscape of coexistence in the Western Carpathians
Throughout Europe, small-scale farmers are facing the challenges of sharing landscapes with growing populations of wild mammals. In this talk, Amy Newsom, a PhD candidate from Utrecht University in the Netherlands, will present findings from recent participatory research in the Czech-Slovak border region of the Western Carpathians. Working with local farmers, the study explored how they envision the future of their landscapes and interactions with wildlife, and what actions they see as necessary to achieve coexistence. Through co-created future scenarios, the research reveals how farmers link coexistence not only to wildlife management, but also to community cooperation, landscape stewardship, and the economic viability of small-scale farming.
Tara Neary – Examining the effect of forest cover changes on wild boar damage to grass fields in the Western Carpathians
Wild boar can cause considerable damage to farmland when they root for food during times of scarcity. Although wider damage patterns may be attributed to boar abundance and density, there is a lack of consensus about the drivers of more localised patterns of damage. In this presentation, recent MSc graduate Tara Neary from Utrecht University, the Netherlands, will discuss the results of her thesis research, which examined whether past and recent changes to local forest cover influence the occurrence and severity of boar damage.
