The program began with an informal evening gathering of participants at the DODNA Wine Bistro, which provided an opportunity for networking and the exchange of experiences among representatives of various institutions.
The professional portion of the program was divided into two thematic blocks reflecting current challenges in the field of sustainability. The morning program focused on legislative changes and their impact on the operation of universities. “Participants were introduced to the new European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which was presented by a representative from EKO-KOM. This was followed by a presentation by Blanka Machová from Masaryk University on the latest developments in the preparation of a voluntary framework for sustainable reporting at universities,” explained Markéta Koláčková, sustainability manager at Mendel University.
Tereza Kučerová from the Brno University of Technology opened the afternoon session with a discussion on the possibilities of coordinated data collection focused on sustainability awareness in the academic environment. This was followed by a technical presentation by CI3 on the issue of carbon footprints and the sharing of best practices among participating institutions. The final part of the program provided an opportunity for an open debate on the platform’s planned activities for the coming period, including preparations for European Sustainable Development Week, which takes place annually from September 20 to 26.
After the official portion of the event concluded, participants were treated to a tour of the MENDELU Botanical Garden and Arboretum, which provided a pleasant conclusion to the entire gathering.
The UNILEAD platform has long contributed to the development of sustainability at Czech universities by sharing best practices, creating common tools, and strengthening collaboration across institutions. The meeting in Brno once again confirmed that a coordinated approach and open communication are key to effectively addressing the challenges that sustainability poses in the higher education environment.
