Hrášek Kindergarten for the children of employees and students of the Mendel University in Brno has been operating for ten years. The kindergarten opened on February 1, 2013, with two classes with a capacity of forty children. Due to great interest, the capacity was increased by three places a year ago. The university kindergarten is primarily intended for the children of employees and students, but other interested parties can also use it if there are free capacities. It is located in the premises of the Jan Amos Komenský dormitories in Kohoutova Street.
“Hrášek Kindergarten has gained a good reputation as a modern university kindergarten, there is a lot of interest in it, there is a waitlist for a place in Hrášek, priority is of course given to MENDELU employees. For me, this anniversary means looking back at where the kindergarten has moved, as well as at the work of me and the entire team.” stated Martina Schoříková Horáčková, head of academic kindergarten Hrášek. "We are glad that the kindergarten is working so well. It is one of the tools for supporting the work-life balance for our employees and students. As part of the anniversary, the children will receive a new game element from the university, which will be placed on the repaired playground," said Jan Mareš, Rector of MENDELU. He then expressed his wish to the children that, as graduates of preschool education, they would find their way back to the university in the future, for example when choosing a university degree. The kindergarten cooperates closely with the university. “Children participate in university events such as the Mendel Run. They visit the library or the arboretum within the Brno area, but they also visited the arboretum in Křtiny and the School of Agriculture in Žabčice," the director listed. Hrášek also offers leisure clubs for children. "There is a lot of interest in the Lesáček club, but English, a movement-dance club or speech therapy are also on offer. The teachers of the classes are often students of MENDELU," added the director. By establishing a kindergarten, Mendel University in Brno responded to the problem of insufficient capacity in state kindergartens. One of the motivations for its establishment was also the effort to support young workers at the university. The interest in the creation of a care facility for preschool children was also confirmed by a questionnaire survey, in which 95% of respondents expressed their opinion in favor of the creation of a kindergarten. The common goal was to build a well-equipped kindergarten registered in the school register, which will offer a quality educational program.
