SU GREGOOR

At first glance, it looks like a scene from a B-horror or sci-fi movie. Mendel, the founder of genetics, is holding his notes for a study called ‘Experiments in Plant Hybridization’ and is clearly taken aback by the pea monster he has managed to grow.

The artwork combines a historical reference with a pop culture visual of our time: a monster that refers in form to the ‘Stranger Things’ series and the character ‘Demogorgon’, or the carnivorous plant from the Czechoslovak movie ‘Dinner for Adele’.

The catchphrase ‘Su Gregoor’, which twists seriousness into humour with exaggeration, refers to the Brno inflection and also to the character ‘Groot’ from the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ comics, who says nothing but ‘I am Groot!’

EXPO 2025 OSAKA, JAPAN

Mendel’s graphics will not remain just in Brno – its motifs will also be presented to the world. The mural will be showcased at the EXPO 2025 World Exhibition in Osaka, Japan, as part of the Czech Republic’s national presentation and as a tribute to the scientific legacy of Gregor Johann Mendel.

Using this visual in the context of EXPO is a chance to demonstrate that Mendel University not only preserves tradition but also reinterprets it in an innovative way for today’s world. The ‘SU Gregoor’ visual will represent our university as an institution that honors the past while speaking the language of the future. In a country where visual communication is as important as the spoken word, this approach will have a strong impact.

Transformer Station Gets a New Look

The transformer station on Drobného Street in Brno is getting a fresh new look. The previously graffiti-covered building will undergo a visual transformation thanks to a mural by artist and illustrator Dalibor ‘MAX’ Krch. The artwork is being created in cooperation with Mendel University in Brno.

Mendel is not depicted here as an austere bust, but as a vivid, dynamic figure — someone who could just as easily be an explorer as the hero of a graphic novel.

Location of the transformer station

The transformer station is located in Brno on Drobného Street, just a few metres behind the footbridge that crosses the road to the Botanical Garden and Arboretum, or behind Building R on the outer edge of the university campus.

This modern visual is not just a playful artwork — it’s a reminder that science, education, and the courage to explore have deep roots in Brno. And that figures like Mendel deserve to be part of our everyday surroundings – not only in formal halls, but also in unexpected places: on a wall, on a transformer station, on the way to work, or while waiting for the tram.
