Traversing the Galactic Center in Space and Time

Brno
MENDELU

An international symposium focused on the galactic center – an area where the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A*, dense star clusters, massive molecular clouds, and prominent magnetic structures meet. The event will bring together leading experts in observational and theoretical astrophysics of this extreme environment.

The program will feature the latest results from JWST, GRAVITY/ERIS interferometers, Keck telescopes, X-ray observatories (Chandra, XMM-Newton, XRISM, IXPE), and ALMA and MeerKAT radio systems, including new findings from multi-messenger astronomy.

Nobel Prize winners Andrea Ghez and Reinhard Genzel will speak at the symposium, along with other prominent figures in astrophysics and galactic research.

Main topics

  • new insights into the behavior of Sgr A* across wavelengths,
  • stellar dynamics and star formation in extremely dense environments,
  • the structure and evolution of nuclear star clusters and disks,
  • the physics and chemistry of the central molecular zone,
  • comparisons between our galactic core and the cores of nearby galaxies.
  • The symposium will offer a comprehensive overview of the current state of research on the galactic center and prospects for further research.
