CitySense – workshop for MENDELU postgraduate students

MENDELU

Mendel University in Brno, in cooperation with Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (Israel), invites master’s and doctoral students to CitySense – a week-long workshop focused on environmental sensing and urban sustainability.

The aim of the workshop is to give students experience working with real urban data and teach them how to convert it into meaningful analytical outputs. They will gain practical skills and tools that they can use in further research – from data analysis to reproducible workflows.

About workshop

CitySense is a data-oriented workshop. All projects will be based on existing datasets, such as:

  • satellite data,
  • ground networks for measuring air quality and meteorology,
  • traffic cameras,
  • other urban data sources, and data feeds.

The emphasis will be on practical tools for data analysis and reproducible procedures that transform urban data into meaningful and publishable outputs. The aim of the workshop is to produce high-quality data-driven research in the field of urban sustainability while providing participants with advanced tools and practical skills.

For whom is the workshop intended?

Master’s students and postdocs focusing on, for example:

  • engineering, environmental sciences,
  • geoinformatics,
  • urbanism and city planning,
  • computer science and data science,
  • or related fields,
  • who have practical experience with data analysis and a clear interest in urban sustainability, are eligible to apply.

What you will need for your application

Send one PDF file containing:

  1. CV,
  2. one-page summary of your research project proposal (realistically feasible during the workshop)
  3. a brief description of relevant experience (we recommend listing specific tools that you actually use, such as Python, R, SQL, QGIS, ArcGIS, Google Earth Engine, Git, working with time series, spatial joins, sensor data quality control, and machine learning basics).

What you can expect

  • short and focused lectures (climate, urban sensing, data methods),
  • long blocks of concentrated work with mentor support,
  • friendly competition for the best analyses with small prizes,
  • accompanying program and networking,
  • final presentation of results.

The event is in English. You will need your own laptop.
