“The secondary school at MENDELU is being established as a natural bridge between secondary school and university. We want to offer secondary school students the opportunity to experience university firsthand—to learn how to study, think, and work at a university before they decide on their future educational path. We expect that it will help participants better orient themselves in choosing a field of study and at the same time show them that university study is not only about theory, but also about practice, cooperation, and solving real problems. Our goal is to encourage their curiosity, critical thinking, and motivation to learn new things—skills that are key no matter what career path they choose in the future,” said Ondřej Mocek, Vice-Rector for Education and Quality.
Classes will be held every Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. The first lesson will begin on February 26 and will focus on effective learning methods. “We are constantly learning—from our own experiences, mistakes, and also from others. Without learning, we would not be able to live and function in society. In this workshop, we will focus on how each of us best absorbs new information, how to increase learning efficiency, and how to pass on our knowledge to others,” explained David Kryštof from the Institute of Lifelong Learning, who is responsible for one of the lessons.
A total of six teaching blocks will cover topics from each of the university’s five faculties and the Institute of Lifelong Learning. Other lessons will offer insight into the world of symbiotic microorganisms in horticulture or explore the future of food production. During the workshop, students will learn how to use artificial intelligence effectively and will also get a glimpse into state-of-the-art laboratories for researching the properties of wood.
Finally, on May 7, graduates of the High School University will meet for a lesson focused on the resilience of cities to climate change. Upon completing at least five lectures, students will receive a certificate confirming their graduation from the High School University at MENDELU.
