About the University


Mendel University in Brno (abbreviated to MENDELU) is a public institution with a long tradition of excellence in teaching and research that has driven new ways of thinking since 1919 and proudly bears the name of J. G. Mendel, the founder of modern genetics. There are over 8,300 students at the university, including 5,500 undergraduates and 2,800 postgraduates. Nearly 1,600 international students make up almost 20 % of the total student body. Mendel University offers more than 100 different graduate degree programmes in Czech and in English languages. The University comprises one University Institute and five faculties: AgriSciences, Business and Economics, Forestry and Wood Technology, Regional Development and International Studies and Horticulture. The modern university campus is based in Brno, the second largest city in the Czech Republic - the heart of Europe. Brno is considered one of the best student cities as it is listed in the 2018 Top 10 QS Best Student Cities as rated by students.

University institute


We believe that practical skills with regard to real-life problem solving is vital for a high quality education system. Therefore, Mendel University in Brno owns unique facilities dedicated to science and teaching which offer our students the opportunity to develop and confront their skills and knowledge. The facilities include the Botanical Garden and Arboretum, Training Agricultural Enterprise Žabčice and Training Forest Enterprise Masarykův Les Křtiny.



Botanical Garden and Arboretum are located nearby the university campus. Apart from its science and teaching aim, it offers students and staff a great place to relax or study. The Garden and Arboretum cover 11 hectares. Academics and the public can enjoy its well-known orchid collection or 500 alpine plants, 2,000 perennials and 4,000 woody plants in the outdoor area. Training Agricultural Enterprise Žabčice is located 25 km south of Brno. The aim of the Enterprise is to help students teach practical skills in arable farming and animal husbandry. Activities of the enterprise include winemaking and selling farming and animals products.



Training Forest Enterprise Masarykův Les Křtiny take pride in its area. The Forest Enterprise covers more than 10,000 hectares (a soccer/football pitch could fit into it 9,500 times!). The Forest Enterprise holds an unique position in its fulfilment of the aesthetic and educational functions of the forest. There are whole forest stands where the natural species composition were left without any intervention in the past for this very purpose. These stands were later used for a gradual building of the existing network of 19 nature reserves (8 % of the total area). Visit Training Forest Enterprise.
